Serangoon Garden Market

31st May, Sunday

Fried Bee Hoon (SG Nasi Lemak)

As usual, we like to give the underdog a chance. So when this stall opened and replaced the old Newton Circus Fried Kway Teow stall (damn, the old man retired!) we decided to give it a try.

It was not bad! I like bee hoon that is not too oily, and this one obviously passes the mark. Taste-wise, it was decent. The chilli was quite good too. Of special mention is the fried egg. It's just a fried egg, right? Wrong. They fried it wonderfully such that the egg yolk is still liquid while the egg white is just firm enough; neither too hard or still in a semi-liquid stage. Delicious!

V's verdict: 7/10

Tau Huay (TSM 陈顺美)

After this got posted in ieatishootipost, we noticed a significant increase in customers this morning (me included). It shows how popular his blog is!

Ok, the tau huay here is extremely silky and smooth. And it's not too sweet. I don't like stuff that is too sweet, but I still think that this can be a bit more sweet.

River South (Hoe Nam) Prawn Noodles

30th May, Saturday

Prawn mee

Located at 31 Tai Thong Crescent (Potong Pasir), beside the old Jackson's. This is still my favourite prawn mee; I still haven't eaten any other prawn mee that can beat this!

I ordered it with pork ribs and intestines. They serve small prawns or big prawns, but I didn't choose either because small prawns don't taste as sweet, while it's so troublesome to eat big prawns.

The pork ribs are good, without any of the frozen taste which I abhor. But the most important part is the soup --- the soup was simply superb. They apparently use lots of prawns and pork bones to cook their stock, so it's thick and full of natural flavour. Add some of their chilli powder in and you get an irresistable bowl of prawn noodles.

Food Junction (Junction 8)

29th May, Friday

Beef pepper rice (Pepper Lunch Express)

(Didn't have time to take a picture, so I took this from their website)

I have eaten this several times before at other outlets, and they were all quite good. Today's was quite standard too. It tastes especially good if you add their honey sauce or garlic sauce into the rice and mix it well. I ordered an upsize for $2 more.

The service at this stall is a different matter, though. The cashier taking orders was quite friendly, and even held the menu for me to see when it was my turn to order. The auntie serving the customers, however, had a frozen expressionless face and looked quite sullen. And the kitchen took ages to serve one dish! There were only 5 people in front of me, but I waited like 15 minutes for my turn. Totally unacceptable. $5.80 + $2

Nasi Lemak (Market Street Nasi Lemak)

One of the few times I actually ate at Golden Shoe without buying takeaway! This was average only. The drumstick was dry. The fish were decent. The ikan bilis were good, though! But they only gave me such a small portion. The chilli was not bad too. But for this price, it's a pretty good value for money! $2.50

Roast chicken (Lim's Chicken & Roasted Delights)

Didn't get a chance to take this picture. Anyway, after tasting the delicious roast pork from this stall, I decided to try their roast chicken.

I was disappointed! The chicken was quite poorly done. The skin didn't taste good. The texture of the meat wasn't that tender and natural. The meat itself wasn't tasty too. And I ordered drumstick too, the supposedly best part of the chicken.

Sigh! I had high expectations... $3

Canopy

25th May, Monday

Took advantage of the 1-for-1 AMEX offer at Canopy on Mondays to Thursdays for brunch. Was getting sick of the usual stuff we usually order, so we tried getting sandwiches instead.

Tuna sandwich

This was a bit too heavy for breakfast, if you ask me. It was decent, except that the menu said that the cheese was "melted cheddar cheese" --- which it wasn't, by the way. It was just cold slices of cheese.

As for the bread, it was toasted just nice, which my mother liked. And the fries were freshly fried.

Overall, this was okay. $14

V's verdict: 6.5/10

Bacon sandwich

This was excellent, mainly because of the bacon they used (the usual). Like the tuna sandwich, the bread was also toasted well, and the grain mustard mayonnaise they used was good! Definitely worth a try, though perhaps not for breakfast. It's a bit too heavy for me. $13

V's verdict: 8/10

Serangoon Central Food Court (万金)

24th May, Sunday

Century egg porridge with pork (261 瓦煲饭.粥

This is the thick kind of porridge. It wasn't too bad, but it could be a bit saltier. Most of the pork in my bowl was lean pork, which didn't taste too good. $3.30

V's verdict: 6/10
K's verdict: 7/10

Pork chops (Wonderful Market Produce Shop Western Food)

The name of the stall sounds like something they translated directly from chinese. Anyway, contrary to its name, this dish was not wonderful at all. The pork had absolutely zero taste. Whatever taste it had was due solely to the sauce. Perhaps the pork had been frozen for too long? It could also be due to the pork being defrosted and frozen again several times.

The pork slices were too thin too. The fries were cold. Bleargh. $5

V's verdict: 4/10

Holland V.21 Nasi Lemak

23rd May, Saturday

Laksa

They call it Sungei Road Trishaw Laksa. Is it a kind of laksa, or is it laksa from a particular place? Anyway, you can just eat this with a spoon, as the bee hoon is cut into small pieces. It's quite convenient actually, and you don't have to worry about the laksa gravy splashing on your clothes.

This was average only. Nothing special. Compared to Hong Lim's Sungei Road Trishaw laksa, the gravy is a bit thicker, but it doesn't taste better in particular.

21st May, Thursday

Roast pork (Lim's Chicken & Roasted Delights)

I ordered this as an afterthought. It's on the second floor, and I was surprised that they were willing to sell me some roast pork for $2. And I was given quite a reasonable amount of pork for $2. Many other stalls only sell if you order like, $5 of roast pork.

Anyway since I ordered it as takeaway and the meat was placed in a transparent plastic bag, it looked too unsightly for me to take a picture of it. And such a picture wouldn't do it justice, because it was actually quite good! The meat was delicious, the skin was crispy. The only thing is
that there was too much fat; for pieces there was actually more fat than meat.

Will definitely visit it again and take a proper picture!

V's verdict: 8/10

Update on 26th May 2009: I revisited it and sadly, it wasn't that good this time. Maybe the standard isn't consistent. My verdict this time = 6/10

Hiang Ji Roasted Meat & Noodle House

20th May, Wednesday

At Toa Payoh Central. This stall seems to be competing fiercely with Choo Chiang, which is just 2 or 3 units away. Apparently, this one is winning with always more customers than Choo Chiang.

Roast duck noodles

Okay, my judgement was skewed because the roasted duck parts they gave me suck. It's the wing area, where the meat is the driest and toughest. But there was some breast meat which didn't taste good too. Nothing special with the noodles. $3

V's verdict: 5/10

Dumpling soup

Their soup was decent, but the dumplings were okay. $3

Fried rice with salted fish (Poh Kee Kitchen, Noodles and Rice)

This is on the 3rd floor of Golden Shoe Food Centre. Okay, I love salted fish and I think that adding it to fried rice or beansprouts makes it taste fantastic! This dish was not bad, but not as good as I expected from fried rice with salted fish. So far, the best fried rice I have tasted was from Crab Party's (at Yio Chu Kang road, opposite Serangoon Stadium) sambal fried rice. This one is nowhere near their standard. $3.50

108 Eating House, Select Cafeteria

19th May, Tuesday

108 Eating House:

Chicken Laksa

I heard people raving about their laksa, so I went to try it today. 108 Eating House is located at The Arcade, which is at Raffles Place.

I was disappointed. The soup was only average; it wasn't thick or tasty enough. I had to add chilli in an attempt to enhance the flavour. The chicken was tough and rather tasteless. They were saved partially by their noodles and beansprouts, which were not bad. $4.50

Without the chicken, it costs $3.50.

V's verdict: 6/10

Select Cafeteria:

Mee Siam

Select Cafeteria is located at the basement of Chevron House, which is directly connected to Raffles Place MRT. They are more well known for their western food, but I wanted to try their local food today.

Ok, the thick layer of oil on top of the mee siam was immediately a huge turn-off for me. I can't stand the sight of so much oil in my food! The tau kua was dry, tough, and tasteless. The soup was a bit too sweet and not spicy enough. Boo! $3

Canopy

18th May, Monday

Canopy again. I think we have tried almost everything on their breakfast menu. -.-

Eggs Royale

This is quite similar to their Eggs Benedict, except that the bacon is replaced with smoked salmon. But this time, we told the chef not to add too much vinegar when poaching the eggs. And it turned out great! Other than not tasting too sour, the eggs were also poached well --- the egg yolk was still runny but the egg white was cooked. Not sure if the hollandaise sauce is self-prepared or purchased; I still prefer Coffee Bean's Eggs Ben's hollandaise sauce.

Okay, maybe I can try their Eggs Ben again if it doesn't have so much vinegar. $13

V's verdict: 7.5/10

Eggs Florentine

Basically the same dish as Eggs Ben and Eggs Royale, except that the filling is spinach. Wilted spinach, to be precise. It means that the spinach is cooked until the spinach leaves have wilted. $12

I found this quite bland. The duck wasn't tasty enough too. $3

V's verdict: 5/10

Yong Tau Foo (Koo Kee Yong Tow Foo Mee)

I was a bit disappointed when I saw it, as it looked way better on its display picture. The soup was a bit bland. The noodles were okay after adding the sauce, and the yong tau foo ingredients were all right. Overall, nothing special --- I probably won't eat it again.

Banquet (Clifford Centre)

15th May, Friday

Mixed beef special set (Beef Noodles)

I think cabbage is ugly. And wouldn't you agree that the cabbage made the soup look less appetizing? (I do eat cabbage, by the way)

I wasn't expecting much from this, but it turned out okay. The soup was not bad, though it had a bit too much MSG. The beef innards were quite good too. The meatballs weren't satisfying though; they didn't have the natural beef flavour. The rice was horribly hard and I ate less than half of it. A bit on the expensive side. $5.50

V's verdict: 6/10

Yong tau foo

Oops, you can't see any of the ingredients except for bittergourd and green chilli. Well, this tasted decent too.

I seldom order yong tau foo outside, because of 2 reasons: 1) my mother's yong tau foo tastes so good that the yong tau foo outside cannot make it relatively, and 2) the ingredients are sometimes left outside and exposed for too long, making them potentially a sponge for bacteria.

K ordered this, and I tried some of it. The ingredients didn't taste as fresh as the ones my mother bought from the market, but it was still acceptable. The soup was all right.

K claims that it tastes like the Malaysian version, so she gave it a high score.

Maxwell Food Centre

15th May, Friday

After Wednesday's porridge, I was really craving for some good porridge. So I went to Maxwell Market with some of my colleagues.

Century egg porridge (Zhen Zhen Porridge)

(Ack, I should have taken a picture of it before stirring)

This is still the best porridge I have ever tasted. The porridge is thick to the point of being described as creamy. But that's the way I like my porridge! I don't like watery porridge; it doesn't even fill the stomach for more than an hour.

The porridge came full of ingredients --- chicken slices and century egg. I have asked them before, and they confirmed that they do not serve pork. That probably explains the Malay that was queuing in front of me.

There weren't a lot of people in front of me, but I still took almost half an hour to order my porridge. They have 3 people in the stall --- one cooks the porridge and prepares the 鱼生, one washes the dishes and cuts the fish, and the other takes orders, collects money, and serves the porridge. Each bowl takes quite a long time to prepare; the cook will scoop the plain porridge from his giant stove, pour it into a saucepan, add in the ingredients, and cook it separately. Add the fact that he is also preparing the 鱼生, and it pretty much explains the long waiting time.

Still, to me, it's worth the wait. Definitely coming back for more. Do remember to stir the porridge well though, or the taste won't be homogeneous. And unless you are a huge eater, don't you dare order the biggest bowl --- you are gonna get stuffed beyond measure. The porridge is thick enough, and a big bowl gives an over-generous serving of ingredients that you will practically unmovable after eating! $2.50/$3/$4

V's verdict: 9/10

鱼生 (Zhen Zhen Porridge)

This gets really popular during CNY for obvious reasons. But I always order it when I queue up for their porridge (might as well, right?).

It's quite simple, as they add mainly fried onions, ginger, spring onion, and of course, fish. I don't know what kind of fish it is though (my knowledge of fish is woefully limited).

Anyway, this tasted quite good, and the fish is fresh. The ingredients go well together, and it's value for money too. $2/$3/$4/$5

14th May, Thursday

Fishball noodles (隆兴百万鱼圆)

This was quite good. The beansprouts were fresh, the seasoning was good, and compared to other fishball noodles, the chilli was also spicier. The texture of the fishballs was also quite "bouncy" and was tasty as well.

And they don't charge extra if you order takeaway. $3.50

V's verdict: 7.5/10

Ah Chang's Porridge

13th May, Wednesday

This is located at Toa Payoh Central, behind Singtel and along the stretch with Choo Chiang and Hiang Ji.

Century Egg Porridge with Lean Pork

The porridge was disappointing. It tasted so bland that me, K and her friend all had to add light sauce into it for more flavour. And the interior of the place was freaking hot and stuffy, even with fans blowing (the wind seemed unable to reach us). $4.50

V's verdict: 5/10

Mixed Pork Porridge

Basically, it's just the same porridge with different ingredients. Conclusion: equally lousy.

K's verdict: 5/10

Braised pork intestines

Okay, this wasn't too bad. At first bite, this seemed like consolation for the disappointing porridge. Lightly seasoned, not too oily, and didn't taste too strong. $5

Conclusion: I am not coming here again. Other than porridge, they pretty much have nothing else, and their porridge is frankly speaking, quite poor. Add the lousy ventilation, and it's a no man's land for me.

V's verdict: 6.5/10
K's verdict: 7/10

Golden Shoe Food Centre

13th May, Wednesday

幼面 (Qin Ping Ban Mian . Fish Soup . Pig's Organ Soup)

On the 2nd floor of Golden Shoe. Ordered takeaway again, and instead of pork, I asked for chicken.

The soup was not bad. To me, that's the most important. But the chicken tasted sour! I have ordered this before, and it never tasted like this. I threw away most of it. And the egg yolk was broken today, something I didn't like. I prefer my egg yolk to be intact and of course, not too cooked. Other than that, it was all right. And like most of the food at Golden Shoe, it's cheap too. $2.50 + $0.20

One thing that irks me is that the stallkeeper used his bare hands (the same hands that handle money) to hold the part of the disposable spoon you put into your mouth instead of the handle. I have seen this "practice" in many places. Are these people idiots or what? It's a good thing I brought my own spoon and chopsticks to office!

V's verdict: 6/10

MacPherson BBQ Seafood

12th May, Tuesday

This is located at the junction of North Bridge Road and Upp Circular Road, despite its name.

BBQ Stingray with Chilli Sotong

(Hmm... why are they using a Kopitiam plate?)

In my opinion, this is still one of the best places for BBQ stingray, though their standard isn't always consistent. For example, there was a period of time in 2006 where their standard dropped significantly and I stopped visiting them for several months. Also, the stingray quality is different for lunch and dinner; dinner seems to be prepared by someone else and the stingray is always overcooked and dry.

Today's stingray was a bit below the normal standards, but it's already better than many other places I have tried before. The rice was too hard. Their sambal chilli was good, though it could be hotter. The sotong today was better than usual though --- fresh and tender. $6.90 (without the egg)

Lor Mee (Wei Nan Wang Hock Kian Lor Mee)

Located on the 3rd floor of Golden Shoe. My general impression of lor mee is that it is thick, heavy, and very filling. This one changed my mind.

I ordered this as takeaway. They packed the crispy stuff separately, which was a bonus. It came with lots of ingredients, including fish, so I was pleasantly surprised. The gravy is much thinner than other lor mee, but it didn't taste diluted. The only drawback is that their pork had the not-defrosted-properly taste, but it was quite mild.

The final thing is, it's dirt cheap. $2 / $3

Canopy, Greenroom

10th May, Sunday

Canopy (again)! Saw their Mother's Day set menu yesterday, so we decided to try it today. We ordered 2 sets from Canopy and 1 set from Greenroom, a neighbour vegetarian restaurant which was also run by the same management.

Rare Tuna Salad

This came with cucumber tagliatelle and soya mirin dressing. The tuna was done just nice, seared on the outside but still raw inside. The dressing was light and complemented the tuna instead of overpowering it.

V's verdict: 7.5/10

Spinach Salad

This was served with roasted pumpkin and feta cheese, sprinkled with almonds. The feta cheese was excellent, but there wasn't enough of it. Overall, not bad.

V's verdict: 6.5/10

Wild Mushroom Potatoes Gnocchi

My father ordered this. It came with sugar pea, brown butter and lemon. I tried it and didn't like it; it was too bland and light for me. Maybe it's because it's a vegetarian meal?

V's verdict: 5/10

Braised Pork Cheeks

My main course. The description said it came with "crispy croutons", but does that piece of toast on top count as crispy croutons (plural)?

The red wine sauce was great; thick and delicious. The pork cheek was also tender, but depending on the direction you bite it, it can be very tough. For such meat portions, you would have to eat it along the "lines", which you can see if you cut it open. Great dish!

V's verdict: 8/10

Crab Meat Linguine

A light pasta dish, sauteed with spring onion and chilli coriander. The crab was fresh and good too.

V's verdict: 7.5/10

Pandan Panna Cotta

Served with brandy snap. I am not too good at rating desserts, but this dish was quite good; light and not too sweet.

V's verdict: 6.5/10

Dark Chocolate Mousse

The chocolate mousse was very thick, and is definitely not for people who dislike thick chocolatey stuff. I found it quite all right though.

10th May, Sunday

There's another food court just down the road, also on Serangoon Ave 3. This one is beside Block 237, opposite the tiny and cramped NTUC Fairprice.

Fishball noodles (利发面家)

I ordered bak chor mee, but this came instead. Well, it was a pleasant surprise. The seasoning was excellent, the noodles were the right texture, and the fishballs were tasty. I haven't had such good fishball noodles in ages. And it's cheap too! $2.50 / $3

Canopy

9th May, Saturday

Eggs Benedict

This tasted a bit different from the other Eggs Ben I have tried at Coffee Bean and also in Australia. The eggs are poached, so vinegar may be added to the water in order to prevent the egg white from dispersing. But I also read that if the egg is fresh enough, the egg white will stay clinging to the egg yolk.

So Canopy also added vinegar when poaching the eggs for this dish. But I think they added too much; the taste was a bit overpowering. The hollandaise sauce was also not thick enough, but the bacon was good. Overall, not really my kind of Eggs Ben. The price was a bit steep too. $12

V's verdict: 5.5/10

Update: This dish will taste better if you ask the chef not to use so much vinegar when poaching the egg! Will update the score the next time I visit.

Eggs with bacon and sausages

The bacon and sausages came as a side order, just like last time. Along with the sunny-side eggs and toast, this dish was fantastic. It's quite easy to make though, as the most important thing is to get good quality bacon and sausages. Sunny-side up eggs are easy to prepare, assuming your eggs are fresh enough. A bit on the expensive side though. $7 + $3 + $3

Note: Don't order your eggs to be fried on both sides unless the chef Desmond is around! I ordered it before and it came out as a disaster.

V's verdict: 7.5/10

Chiew Kee Noodle House

8th May, Friday

Located at 32 Upper Cross St. Just a few steps away, there's another eatery called Chew Kee Eating House, located at 8 Upper Cross St (Notice the "Chew", without the "i"). There were stories that these 2 eateries were run by a brother and sister, who went separate ways after disputes.

This outlet is the one supposedly run by the brother. Honestly, I only came here today because Chew Kee was closed.

Dumpling soup

(Ah, I was in a hurry taking this picture that I didn't notice the light reflection!)

This was disappointing. The soup was too plain and bland, and tasted strongly of vegetables. In fact, it seems like just a bowl of vegetable soup. There wasn't anything special with the dumplings too, and even their chilli, which can be a big saving factor for lots of food, wasn't good. Give me Chew Kee's soup anytime over this.

V's verdict: 4.5/10
K's verdict: 4/10

Soy chicken

Ok, they managed to redeem themself partially with this. The gravy is dark and goes well with the chicken and rice. The chicken flesh was also quite tender.

I ordered it with some chicken liver, and it was quite good too.

This wasn't the exact name, but it's quite long and I forgot to take it down. -.-

Located on the 5th floor of OUB Centre. We ordered this at 845am today. We were the only customers in the cafe, but this dish took twenty minutes to come! I was thinking, "it had better be good."

It wasn't.

The dish wasn't hot enough. The sausages were dry. The eggs were bland and tasted a bit stale. The tomatoes were also dry. Thumbs down for both the food and the service! $5.80

Choo Chiang Roasted Meat Noodle House, Tiong Bahru Chwee Kueh

6th May, Wednesday

Both are located at Toa Payoh Central, behind Singtel.

Choo Chiang Roasted Meat Noodle House:

From some forums, it seems that this place was actually quite famous, and there was even one copycat that sprung up, calling itself Zhu Jiang. But during dinnertime today, there was only a handful of customers, and we even took up a table meant for 6. The restaurant nearby had many more customers.

Emperor's herbal chicken

I am a sucker for herbal stuff, and it must be very concentrated and strong. This wasn't strong enough at first sip, but it got better and better after that. The chicken was fresh and tender, and even the breast meat tasted excellent.

V's verdict: 7/10
K's verdict: 7.5/10

Tiong Bahru Chwee Kueh

One of its outlets, at Toa Payoh.

Chwee kueh

A bit oily, but then, most chwee kueh are quite oily. It tasted quite good; the texture of the kueh was good --- soft and yet not too sticky. The radish was also delicious, a far cry from Serangoon Garden Market's.

Soup Spoon

5th May, Tuesday

Lunch today was at Soup Spoon, the outlet at Raffles Place MRT. Their soup was supposedly prepared beforehand from a central location, so I would assume their standard to be more or less consistent. In fact, a copycat has sprung up, also at Raffles Place MRT, but I can't remember the exact name now.

Beef Goulash

One of my favourites from Soup Spoon. Not too thick and yet full of flavour, mainly from the beef and vegetables inside. Today's soup seemed to have a disproportionate amount of vegetables inside, though. The sore point was the bread --- it didn't seem fresh and was a tad too hard. $8.20 for Grande

V's verdict: 7/10
K's verdict: 8/10

Caesar's salad

I only started loving Caesar's salad recently. Theirs was quite good, with the right amount of dressing. I ordered this as part of the Souper upgrade --- $3.90 for half salad and a drink. The bacon bits weren't too good though; I think they used artificial bacon. The croutons were crispy but not tasty enough. But everything else was all right.

Killiney Cafe

4th May, Monday

The outlet at Golden Shoe Car Park. It's the first time I visited this outlet for lunch; normally I would only come here for coffee.

Curry chicken with rice

One of my colleagues recommended this, so I decided to give it a try. The gravy was not bad, but there was a thick layer of oil on top which I removed (it filled up one whole sauce plate). The rice was hard, so I had to add more curry onto it in order to soften it. The curry wasn't spicy enough though. The chicken was decent, while the potatoes were quite good. $7.80

V's verdict: 6.5/10
